Markku Markkula

Markku Markkula (born July 15, 1950 in Kolari ) is a Finnish politician . From 2015 to 2017 he was President of the Committee of the Regions of the European Union . He has been the first Vice President since 2017. In Finland he was a Member of Parliament for the National Collection Party from 1995 to 2003 , where he was a member of two standing parliamentary committees: the Committee on Science, Education and Culture and the Committee on Future Issues. His international field of activity as a Member of Parliament included chairing the Council of the European Parliamentary Technology Assessment (EPTA), a network for technology assessment. Markkula is a member of the Espoo City Council , a member of the Helsinki Region Council, Chairman of the Espoo City Planning Committee and other local political bodies in his home country.

He works full-time at Aalto University as an advisor to the university president with a focus on European integration and EU policy in the areas of research, innovation and education. His previous professional experience includes: a. serving as Director of the Dipoli Institute for Lifelong Learning and as Secretary General of the International Association for Lifelong Learning in Engineering Professions (IACEE). He was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Laurea University of Applied Sciences and Chairman of the Society for Organizational Learning (SOL) in Finland. He was also chairman of the lifelong learning working group of the European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI). He is also one of the ambassadors for the Leonardo - European Corporate Learning Award.

In 2008 he was elected to the "International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame" in recognition of his services.
