Market of Opportunities

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Market of Opportunities is a form of group work . It is used in schools and also at meetings or congresses and is intended to promote creativity .

The group work results are presented in various forms on a marketplace , on which the individual group members alternately present their market stand with the information in discussions with the market visitors and answer questions.

procedure

As a starting point, the participants, divided into small groups, develop part of the overall topic. The following scheme can apply:

  • Participants A1, A2 and A3 work on sub-topic 1
  • Participants B1, B2 and B3 work on sub-topic 2 and
  • Participants C1, C2 and C3 work on sub-topic 3.

Phase 1 (development of expert knowledge)

In the market of possibilities, the first step (development phase) is that these small groups work on a topic or only part of an overall topic together. In the process, groups of experts are formed who collect particularly extensive knowledge about the individual topics or parts and then transfer this knowledge to the others as experts .

Phase 2 (presentation of the expert knowledge)

In the second step (presentation phase) the groups A1-3, B1-3 and C1-3 dissolve and form new groups A1, B1 and C1, A2, B2, C2 and A3, B3 and C3. Thus, in each group there is an expert on a topic from the respective expert groups in the newly formed group and can speak on his expert topic.

Phase 3 (securing results)

Now, of course, the experts each have expert knowledge on their topic, in each of the others they are still “beginners”. There are various ways of solving this: On the one hand, the individual groups can measure their new knowledge against given tasks (the tasks can be worked out by the teacher or the experts, depending on how much time is available for phase 1). Another possibility: the group creates a kind of learning poster on which the new knowledge can be articulated in whatever way - it may also be of interest which group creates the best poster. Through these actions, the new knowledge is applied and is thus secured.

Didactic background

The market of opportunities offers a good opportunity to activate participants. The participants do not get their new knowledge served “chopped up”, but have to work it out. The experts in the group can support and inspire each other. Another advantage is that all “experts” have to contribute equally to the development of the material and the presentation, because they are dependent on this knowledge and the presentation in phase 2, because everyone has to bring their expert knowledge to the other group.

Furthermore, the learned material deepens particularly well, because you not only acquire the new knowledge as "dead knowledge", but have to actively use it. They have to find explanations of the new knowledge and convey them at the market stall and, if necessary, think of additional examples to support the presentation phase. This increases and strengthens the retention effectiveness. The new knowledge must therefore be applied and structured in the form of an exercise or a summary on a poster.

Integration into a learning environment

Ultimately , an attempt is made in learning platforms to reproduce an excerpt from the real world of communication as accurately as possible. For this purpose, various means of communication must be made available that enable the participants to exchange knowledge and information . In phase 1 (developing expert knowledge), the groups are divided according to the principle of face-to-face communication . After the expert groups have found each other, they create their own area (group) on the learning platform or receive one in which they first create and collect their knowledge among themselves. Links to your topic are listed here and / or texts are stored in electronic form. In addition, a forum will be set up for each expert group in which they can exchange asynchronously on various topics - and discuss problems.

At the same time there are forms of synchronous communication , e.g. B. Video conferencing systems and chats , in which the participants can organize themselves synchronously and exchange problems. A group calendar helps with appointment management.

In phase 2 (presentation), an environment such as Netucate offers all possibilities for presentation and group work. Each presentation group has one room available. The expert can convey his knowledge to the participants either in a lecture or in a group discussion. After this first phase, the results are secured either as part of a practical exercise or in the form of a joint preparation of a final presentation.

Other meanings

The term “market of opportunities” is also used for platforms on which various activities, often from the voluntary environment, can be presented to the public.
