Prestwick Market Cross

The Prestwick Market Cross is a market cross in the Scottish town of Prestwick in the Council Area South Ayrshire . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

A market cross in Prestwick was first mentioned in 1473, but there is evidence that it was erected before the 15th century. This stood at the east end of Kirk Street and thus not far from today's market cross. It was replaced by the current cross in 1777.

description

The Market Cross stands in a small square in front of the former Prestwick Town Hall at the junction between Main Street ( A79 ) and Station Road in the north of the city. The base consists of four stone slabs, which gradually taper in a pyramid shape. The bottom plate has a side length of around 2.4 m. On the top plate, the simple octagonal shaft rises from a mighty square base plate. The shaft closes with a fluted cornice . A stone ball sits on it. A plaque with the year of construction 1777 is embedded in the shaft.
