The Airth Market Cross is a market cross in the Scottish town of Airth in the Council Area Falkirk . In 1972 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. An additional classification as a Scheduled Monument was removed in 2016.

description

The structure is in the center of Airth in a small square at the northwest end of the High Street . It dates from 1697. It rests on a stepped foundation with an octagonal floor plan. The approximately 2.20 m high stele with an octagonal shaft is not in the shape of a cross. A decorated, square head sits on the shaft and ends with an acorn . The southwest and southeast sides of the head are worked as sundials . The other two sides are designed with coats of arms and show the monogram CE , which stands for Charles Elphinstone, 9th Lord Elphinstone , who initiated the construction of the market cross.
