The market square is a square in the small town of Ruhland in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district in the south of Brandenburg . The eaves orientation of the buildings with a gable roof is typical. The building ensemble is registered in the list of monuments of the state of Brandenburg and is in the list of architectural monuments in Ruhland . A weekly market takes place every Thursday. Other regular events are partly organized and supported by the city and partly by associations. This creates opportunities to present yourself and help, which some clubs do regularly.

history

In 1511 Ruhland received the right from King Wladislaus of Bohemia to hold a weekly market every Monday. Later German emperors confirmed and expanded this; In the 16th century the right to hold two cattle markets and a fair was added to recover from fire damage. There is currently a weekly market day.

A Saxon post distance column was erected on the market square in 1732 and removed again in 1830.

In 1883 the market place was completely fortified.

The market square, which was redesigned as part of the inner city renovation, was ceremoniously handed over on December 10, 1994. The market fountain was built according to a design by Reinhard Pfennig and inaugurated on October 14, 1995. Before that, there was a public survey to decide between six designs, including one by the sculptor Jürgen von Woyski . A replica of the Kursächsische Postdistanzsäule from 1732 was inaugurated on October 13, 2012 on the market square.

Easter fountain singing

On Easter Sunday the Ruhland Mixed Choir sings spring songs on the market square. The market fountain is decorated with 25 m of braided tendrils. The first fountain singing in Ruhland was on March 29, 1997.

Shooting festival

Since 1994 the Schützengesellschaft Ruhland 1345 eV has been organizing a shooting festival in the Schützenhausgarten on one of the weekends before or at Pentecost, including the Schützenhausplatz. The shooting festival begins with a move from the market to the shooting range.

Fountain festival in autumn

Since 1995 there has been a fountain festival with a fountain queen in autumn. After a short break, this event revived in 2014.

Night hike

The night hike through Ruhland, led by a city guard (Andreas Peter from Guben), starts at the post mile column, past listed and renovated buildings whose history is explained. The night hike ends at the manor .

Halloween parade

Since 2001, the Carnival Club Ruhland eV (KCR) has been organizing a pageant on Reformation Day from the market square to the Schützenhaus, where the witch's fire is lit. That attracts a lot of visitors: there were 1000 in 2008, twice as many came in 2015.

Santa Claus shopping

Since 2006 there has been a Santa Claus shopping on the Friday evening before December 6th. The event corresponds to a small Christmas market with additional shops open. The city's choirs perform with Advent programs.

B, No. 108 in the Saxon Main State Archives in Dresden there is evidence that the Ruhland column had not yet been made in 1730, because the city of Ruhland requests that only one column be placed on the market instead of several at the city exits - information 1722 in the City chronicle is probably a typo
