Markus Caspers

Markus Caspers (born January 28, 1960 in Koblenz ) is a German designer, author and university lecturer. He is professor for the field of design and media at the faculty for information management at the Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences and lecturer for design theory at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen.

Life

After graduating from Görres-Gymnasium Koblenz , Caspers studied art education, German and English at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. After the first state examination, however, he did not start teaching, but as a graphic designer in the advertising agency GGK in Frankfurt.

At the end of 1988 he moved to Cologne and worked in various Düsseldorf advertising agencies as an art director and copywriter, and from 1993 also as a freelancer for agencies in Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Hamburg. In 1999 he founded the Indianapolis Communication agency in Cologne. From 1989 to 1994 Caspers taught semiotics and goods aesthetics as a lecturer at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . Since then, his publications have been increasingly concerned with semiotic issues and the product form as a carrier of social meanings. In 2009 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD.

Since 2009 Caspers has been teaching at the Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences a . a. Basics of design and various design disciplines. Since 2017 he has also been a lecturer at the Folkwang University of the Arts in the field of design theory.

Work: art, design and science

During his studies, Caspers was already involved as a graphic designer and photographer in the artist collective SELEKTION , to which the groups P16.D4 and SBOTHI belonged. Caspers was active in copy art, made films and designed performances for P16.D4 (1985–1993). From 1993 he worked with various Cologne artists, including a. Peter Bömmels , Theo Lambertin and Michael Kampert. Together with Ralf Wehowsky aka RLW, he conceived the project "Pullover" in 1994 with texts and photos by Caspers as a starting point for the musical adaptation by Wehowsky and other musicians. He has published numerous books on the subjects of design, pop culture, style and semiotics. While at the beginning of the publications there were mainly epochs and their styles, Caspers' work in the last few years has concentrated on specific fields of industrialized design (advertising, automobile design, pop culture) and on imparting analytical methods.
