Marmeleiros

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marmeleiros refers to an archaeological site in the municipality of Quarteira on the southern Portuguese Algarve coast , approx. 16 km northwest of Faro .

It is a probably primarily fishing-oriented settlement, which was built in two phases from the end of the 1st century BC. Existed until at least the end of the 1st century AD. Ceramic finds from this last phase represent the earliest possible point in time ( terminus post quem ) for the abandonment of the square.

With only four archaeologically recorded rooms adjoining a courtyard, it can be regarded as one of the early imperial examples of rural courtyards in the ancient province of Lusitania . Disadvantaged by its location at the end of a deep, slowly silting lagoon , the facility suffered severely from the deteriorating connection to the sea, which is why it lost its economic basis in the medium term.

At the southeast end of the lagoon, the ruins of Cerro da Vila are opposite this site .
