Hans Burla (born April 8, 1920 in Zurich ; † February 24, 2010 there ) was a Swiss zoologist . His main research interests were the special and systematic zoology, in particular the systematics of fruit flies (Drosophilidae).

Life

In 1943 Burla began studying zoology at the University of Zurich , where he received his doctorate in 1951 with a dissertation on the systematics, distribution and ecology of the Drosophila species in Switzerland. During his studies, he traveled to São Paulo on a scholarship , where he spent a year doing research in the group of the population geneticist Theodosius Dobzhansky . After completing his studies, there followed research stays in the Ivory Coast and again with Dobzhansky in Brazil. Burla turned down a professorship offer from Manaus and instead concentrated on a career in Zurich. In 1956 he was with the Scriptures The Drosophilidengattung Zygothrica and its relationship to Drosophilauntergattung Hirtodrosophila with description of 45 new species habilitation and assistant professor at the University of Zurich. In 1959, he succeeded the emeritus professor Hans Steiner as associate professor at the chair for systematic zoology. At the same time, the Zoological Museum was expanded into the new Faculty Institute for Systematic Zoology and Ecology, where Burla took over the management. In 1967 he was appointed full professor. In the period that followed, Burla expanded his research interests. He was involved with a research group in Lake Zurich research and set up a limnological station in Kilchberg and a marine station in Sardinia. In 1985 Burla retired into private life because of cancer.

Burla has written over 100 publications, including 60 on the evolution, systematics and population genetics of the Drosophilidae family. He was the first to scientifically describe several species of fruit flies, including Drosophila alpina and Drosophila helvetica in 1948.

Dedication names
