Marmosops caucae is a bag mammal from the genus of the slim- pouch rats ( Marmosops ). The species occurs in the northern Andes from the extreme northwest from Venezuela through Colombia and Ecuador to the north of Peru, as well as in the highlands of Darién in the east of Panama.

features

The so far accurately measured specimens of Marmosops caucae , four females, had total lengths of 24.3 to 26 cm, a 14.2 to 15.7 cm long tail and a weight of 17 to 24 g. The rear foot length is 13 to 16.85 mm and the ears are 17.2 to 18.7 mm long. The condylobasal length is 30.6 to 31.16 mm. The back fur is brown and the belly light to whitish. The females have seven or nine teats, three or four on each side and one in the middle.

Habitat and endangerment

Marmosops caucae occurs in mountain forests of the northern Andes at altitudes of 300 to 3000 meters, as well as in the highlands of Darién above 1400 meters. Nothing is known about the way of life of Marmosops caucae . Due to the large distribution area and the occurrence in numerous protected areas, Marmosops caucae is considered safe (Least Concern).

Systematics

The species was scientifically described in 1900 by the British zoologist Oldfield Thomas and assigned as a subspecies in 1958 by Cabrera Tschudis slim-pouch rat ( Marmosops impavidus ). The opossum expert Juan F. Díaz-Nieto and colleagues revalidated the species in three publications from 2011 and 2016. At least two different forms can be distinguished, which could be classified as subspecies. For a northern subspecies the name M. caucae caucae is available, a southern one would get the name M. caucae madescens .
