Location of the port of Türkmenbaşy

The port of Türkmenbaşy was completed in its current form in 2018 in the Turkmen city of Türkmenbaşy and is located on the eastern bank of the Caspian Sea .

History of origin

A port had existed in Türkmenbaşy since 1896, but it was mainly used for ferry traffic.

In 2013 the foundation stone was laid for the new port, one of the largest infrastructure projects in Central Asia. The Turkmen President Gurganbuly Berdimuhamedow and the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan were present . Construction work began on the site in August 2014. The aim at this time was to open the port in 2017. However, this was delayed so that the opening ceremony did not take place until May 2, 2018, again in the presence of the Turkmen President. The construction work was carried out by the Turkish construction company Gap Insaat, a subsidiary of Calik Holding . The German Inros Lackner SE took over the design and planning.

investment

Five new terminals and a shipyard were built as part of the new building. In addition, the surrounding infrastructure was improved through the modernization of the railway ferry port and the new construction of the port connection with track and road systems. Another construction project was the construction of an 800-kilometer pipeline from the Galkynysh gas field to the port. The annual handling capacity is 17 million tons.
