Marmosops chucha is a species of marsupial thatoccursin northern Colombia west of the Rio Magdalena . The species was only in 2016 with a revision of the genus marmosops ( Marmosops described) for the first time and named after Chucha, an expression for possums in Colombian Spanish.

description

The animals reach a head body length of 9 to 10.9 cm and have a 12 to 14 cm long tail. Males reach a weight of about 25 g and the only female weighed for the initial description weighed 18 g. Females are usually a little smaller. The fur is brownish, darker on the back and a little lighter on the sides. The underside of the body from the chin to the groin and the insides of the limbs are whitish. The front paws are light on their upper side. The tail is two-colored with a dark upper and a slightly lighter underside. In addition, in many specimens it is darker near the body than at the end further away from the body. Females have nine teats, four each on the right and left and one in the middle.

Marmosops chucha differs from the very similar slender- pouch rat species Marmosops magdalenae , which occurs east of the Rio Magdalena , in the lack of openings in the palatal bone , while these are clearly pronounced in Marmosops magdalenae .

habitat

Marmosops chucha occurs in lowland and mountain rainforests at altitudes of 130 to 1400 meters. Its habitat is now heavily fragmented by clear-cut areas and arable land. Handley's slender rat ( Marmosops handleyi ) lives above the habitat of Marmosops chucha and in a transition zone sympatric with Marmosops chucha .
