Moroccan riad
A riad ( Arabic رياض, DMG riyāḍ ) is a traditional Moroccan house or palace with an inner courtyard or inner garden. The term comes from the Arabic word for garden, riyāḍ (from which the name of the city of Riyadh is derived). The design of these inner courtyards in the coastal region of Morocco goes back to the local adoption of the construction of Roman villas ( atrium house ). The riad became popular with the onset of Islam . They offer protection and privacy to the family. Many riads in Marrakech and Essaouira are now used as hotels.
