Martin Arnold (* 1959 in Vienna ) is an Austrian filmmaker and artist who achieved international fame with his obsessive found footage deconstructions.

Life

Martin Arnold studied Psychology / Art History at the University of Vienna. He has held numerous visiting professorships, including at the San Francisco Art Institute (1996/97), at the Städelschule in Frankfurt (1998/99), at Bard College in New York (2000/01), at Binghamton University, NY (2004- 07), at CalArts in Los Angeles and at Famu in Prague (2009/10).

In his found footage trilogy “pièce touchée” (1989), “passage à l'acte” (1993) and “Alone. Life Wastes Andy Hardy “(1998), Arnold manipulates short image sequences from various Hollywood films in constant forward and backward motion, breaking up shots, sequences and entire scenes into vibrating, small excesses. In a series of recently produced film loops, such as often “Palate” (2010) or “Whistle Stop” (2014), he discovers the gloomy aspects of the cartoon, one of the most classic forms of family-friendly cinema entertainment.
