After completing his studies, Bonnet worked as a manager in research and development at Sika-Trocal.

After being appointed professor for materials science and plastics in 2004, he has been managing director of the Institute for Materials Application at the Faculty for Plants, Energy and Machine Systems at the TH Köln since 2009.

Bonnet has been a visiting professor at the Institute for Biomechanics and Orthopedics at the German Sport University Cologne since 2012 . He was also a visiting professor at the German-Jordanian University in Jordan and at the Beijing University of Chemical Technology in China. Bonnet has been an active member of the Resources section of the Graduate Institute NRW since 2016.

Since 2016, Bonnet has been running the successful YouTube channel “Welt der Werkstoffe” with over 20,000 subscribers and more than 2.5 million video views. Instructional videos on the subject of materials science and plastics technology, but also occasionally entertaining and thematically appropriate videos, are regularly published on the channel.
