overview

In 2011, Yavuz Kurtulmus, as chairman of the MiGay association, founded the Transition Queer Minorities Film Festival (initially IQMF ), the first European film event that focused on the sexuality and diversity of fringe groups of different national origins.

Jasmin Hagendorfer has been the festival's artistic director since 2018. Kurtulmus continues to act as festival director.

In 2020 the festival will be renamed the Transition International Queer & Minorities Film Festival , as the festival now wants to establish itself as a queer film festival.

Orientation and program

The word " queer " was used in the English-speaking world - just like the word " gay " in German - as a swear word with which people who deviated from the heteronormative rules were treated. The term is a kind of collecting basin in which - depending on the self-statement - besides gays, lesbians, bisexuals, intersexuals, transgender, pansexual, asexual and BDSMers, heterosexual people who do not live normatively and practice new queer lifestyles, and many more can be found . A special feature of "queer" compared to identities such as "lesbian" or "gay" is that the emphasis is on one's own gender role, gender identity and way of life - which deviates from heteronormativity.

Historically, Transition was the world's first festival specifically dedicated to queer minorities. You should recognize yourself on screen and overcome the feeling of being alone. At the same time, the exchange with the queer community in general should be strengthened so that the festival forms a bridge between the queer community in general and the minorities (especially queer refugees).

The transition team decided to open the festival to a general festival dedicated to queer life. The festival is renamed from Transition Queer Minorities Film Festival to Transition International Queer & Minorities Film Festival .

Since 2019 it has been showing films from all over the queer field that are intended to shed light on the possibilities and problems of queer life. The program is broad and aims to show mainstream productions as well as indie films.

Cooperations

Within a few years, Transition started a movement, because the idea of dedicating itself to films by and about queer migrants spread quickly. It inspired festival organizers to found similar festivals in Amsterdam (2015), Copenhagen (2015), Faroe Islands (2017), Skopje (2019), Tirana (2019) and Pristina (2019). Outside of Europe, the first festival took place in Islamabad, Pakistan (2015).

Special programs of the Transition Festival were shown at the Fusion Film Festival in Oslo in 2017 and at the Faroe Islands International Minority Film Festival in 2018 .

In 2019, the monthly transition queer film night was organized in cooperation with the Stadtkino Wien and the Votivkino Wien .

The Porn Film Festival Vienna developed from the annual porn evening at Transition .
