The Martinspital or Spital zum Heiligen Martin was the first hospital in Vienna to care for old and sick court employees.

history

Duke Otto the Merry probably founded the Martinspital in his will, as it was first mentioned in 1342, three years after his death. The hospital was located at the intersection of Babenbergerstraße / Getreidemarkt and the Rahlstiege in front of Widmertor .

The incorporation of the property of the abandoned St. Johann Hospital in front of Werdertor in 1343, donated by Friedrich the Beautiful in 1327 in the area of today's Hospital of the Barmherzigen Brüder , made it possible to increase the number of beneficiaries from 17 to 30 (20 for men and 10 for women).

In 1471 Ferdinand III handed over the the Martinspital to the Order of St. George , who took care of the sick. In 1529 the hospital was destroyed during the first Turkish siege and, since it was no longer rebuilt, it was demolished until 1533. After the death of the last Grand Master of the Order of St. George Knights in 1541, Ferdinand I moved in the property of the Martin Hospital. Between 1542 and 1560 he pledged it to the Counts of Salamanca-Ortenburg. From 1564 they were incorporated into the imperial or court hospital .

The hospital, which consisted of several wings, was consecrated to Saints Urban and Martin, but only the name of Saint Martin was used in popular parlance. The church belonging to the hospital had five altars.
