Martinswerk GmbH is a company in the chemical industry with around 500 employees and is based in Bergheim ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The company is one of the world's major suppliers of special chemical products based on aluminum hydroxide and aluminum oxide as well as other raw materials. The customers of the products are the plastics industry, paper industry, paint manufacturers and manufacturers of refractory and polishing agents.

history

Martinswerk was founded in 1913 as a subsidiary of Aluminum Industrie AG, the predecessor company of Alusuisse , and named after Martin Schindler, then General Manager of the company. The purpose of the company was to produce aluminum oxide, also known as slag clay, to supply the group's aluminum smelters . The production process using the Bayer process requires a lot of energy, which is why the location in the Rhenish lignite mining area was chosen.

When aluminum oxide could be obtained more and more cheaply abroad in the 1950 / 1960s, the Martinswerk began to develop modified aluminum oxide and hydroxide products that were used as specialties outside the aluminum industry. These products have a higher added value and open up new customer markets outside of the previously one-sided focus on the aluminum industry. The products serve as a flame retardant, polishing agent, filler, insulation medium, marking agent. The customer structure is diversified: paper industry, plastics and rubber industry, ceramics industry, paint manufacturers, water treatment.

From the mid-1980s, the product range was expanded to include further special oxides and organic auxiliaries. In 1990 the Martinswerk took part in the establishment of a company in Austria that produces magnesium hydroxide . The product range for flame retardants has thus been further expanded. Today the Martinswerk including holdings produces over 100 different products.

After the merger of Alusuisse with the Canadian Alcan (today: Rio Tinto Alcan ), the Martinswerk was sold in 2001 to the American chemical company Albemarle Corporation . Albemarle is also a supplier of specialty and fine chemicals. As a result of a strategic realignment, Albemarle sold the Martinswerk in 2016 to the current owner, JM Huber Corp. Huber is a manufacturer of specialty chemicals. The group of companies employs around 4,000 people worldwide and generates sales of over 2 billion US dollars. The acquisition strengthens u. a. the market position of the Huber Group in flame retardants.
