Mary Millar

Mary Millar (born July 26, 1936 in Doncaster , † November 10, 1998 in London , maiden name Irene May Wetton ) was a British actress and singer. She gained fame as an actress in several well-known musicals, including the original cast of the performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera , and in the role of the man-hungry Rose in the internationally successful sitcom Mehr Schein als Sein .

Life

Private life

Millar's parents were both singers. At first Millar wanted to be a horse trainer, but on the advice of her parents, she decided to pursue a career on stage. The practicing Christian was married to Rafael D. Frame from 1967 until her death; their daughter Lucy (* 1972) comes from the marriage. In January 1998, Millar was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, to which she succumbed on November 10, 1998.

Career

Millar debuted in London's West End in smaller theaters in the late 1950s. In 1960 she played in front of a large audience on Broadway in New York in the musical Camelot . Millar was the understudy for the role of Queen Guinevere and occasionally represented Julie Andrews . Millar was present in the New York and London theater scene through the 1960s and 1970s. She played one of her greatest roles in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical The Phantom of the Opera . There Millar played Madame Giry from the world premiere in 1986 until 1990. In 1991, Millar became known around the world through the sitcom Mehr Schein als Sein . She replaced Shirley Stelfox . In 1997 until her death she played the role of Madame Pottine in the musical Beauty and the Beast , which is based on the 1991 Disney classic of the same name. She also played the lead role in 1998 in the musical The King and I . Mary Millar also ran a one woman show, An Evening with Mary Millar , for several years, speaking about her life, faith and work.
