The Mary Valley Heritage Railway (MVHR) is a 1067 mm (3 ft 6 in ) gauge, 40 km long, museum railroad that runs from Gympie through the Mary River Valley to the Cooloola region of Queensland , Australia .
route
The museum railway is a major tourist attraction in the area and is run by a non-profit association with 12 paid employees and many volunteers. It is considered the third largest museum railroad in Australia.
The Queensland Government's Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation conducted an analysis of the railroad's operating costs in 2010. It found that the railroad is operating at a significant loss and is dependent on government financial support.
The maximum speed is limited to 25 km / h and at some level crossings you have to brake to 5 km / h. After security concerns were raised in 2011, government experts found no significant problems.
If the roads become impassable and blocked during major floods, the railroad is used as feeder traffic to the towns enclosed by the water.
Excursions
The Ride The Rattler excursion tours are operated by the Mary Valley Heritage Railway (MVHR) every Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday from 10:00 am from the historic Gympie train station, which dates back to the 1870s. Pulled by a historic steam locomotive of the Queensland C17 class, the train crosses the Mary River, drives through many curves, negotiates inclines and declines, crosses the Yabba, Kandanga and Amamoor Creeks on historical bridges and passes the small rural villages of Dagun , Amamoor and Kandanga and passes through a short tunnel until it arrives in Imbil after a 40 km journey . The stations of Kandanga, Amamoor and Melawondi as well as the milk can house called Mary Valley Railway Cream Sheds are listed buildings.
According to the website, there is currently (March 2015) no operation.
