The Machine Museum Kiel-Wik ( Mmkw for short ) is located on Kiel Canal 44 near the Kiel Canal in the Kiel-Wik district . It is an industrial museum opened in 1985 and is operated by the Machine Museum Kiel-Wik Foundation. His motto is "Experience historical technology in operation".

The machine museum Kiel-Wik goes back to the private initiative of two people, Peter Horter and Frank Stobbe. Their concern was to preserve a piece of Kiel mechanical engineering history and present it clearly. The basic idea was: machines in operation, technology that works and exhibits you can touch.

The museum is located in two brick buildings of the former Kiel gas works. In December 2005 the non-profit community foundation Maschinenmuseum Kiel-Wik was founded. The purpose of the foundation is "to promote education, culture and the preservation of monuments, in particular the maintenance, operation and further development of the machine museum".

Exhibits

All machines and motors are functional. They were dismantled, cleaned and checked for functionality. Defective parts have been completely overhauled and, if necessary, newly manufactured. The exhibits include a traction engine of Maschinenfabrik Buckau R. Wolf from 1954, which was intended for use in Africa, but it was never delivered or three roadworthy copies of the mini mopeds Minimo - the Alubanane - the company Poppe & Son from Kiel. There is also a submarine diesel from the Mannheim engine works from 1944, which was intended as the main engine for the submarine class XXIII , but was never used. In 1978 it was discovered in a bunker and over the years it was restored to full functionality. In the museum he drives a generator.

The extensively dimensioned steam engine in the adjoining building is also a product of the Buckau R. Wolf machine factory. Once built to illustrate the function of such a machine to Kiel students, it is still used for demonstration purposes, but is operated with compressed air in the museum. In addition to full-size engines, special tools and fully functional models are also on display. Numerous display boards and photographs explain further connections. Machines are shown in operation every third Sunday of the month. In addition to the permanent exhibition, there are various themed exhibitions. Admission is free.
