Masia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A masia is a typical country house in Catalonia , but is common throughout the territory of the former Kingdom of Aragon .

The building, which consists of two to three floors outside of built-up areas, consists mostly of roughly hewn natural stone and is used for agriculture and livestock. The masias had their origins in old Roman villas, which developed into their present form in the 16th and 17th centuries. In addition to the rural use, many masias are now abandoned and left to decay. Others have been converted into overnight accommodations for rural tourism.
