Massacres in Solhan and Tadaryat

The Solhan massacre was an attack that killed at least 160 people in the morning hours of June 5, 2021 in Solhan , a small town in Burkina Faso . The perpetrators of the attack are unknown, the government of Burkina Faso attributes the act to jihadist terrorists . Previously, 14 people had been killed in the village of Tadaryat on the evening of June 4. Both places are in the province of Yagha . The attack was the bloodiest since the start of the series of attacks in Burkina Faso in 2015.

Course of events

The attack began around 2 a.m. and was initially directed against a post of the Volontaires pour la défense de la Patrie (VDP, "Volunteers for the Defense of the Fatherland"), a citizens' militia set up in 2019 with which the government is trying to protect certain regions regain lost control and support the military in its fight against the jihadists. The attackers set fire to buildings in the market area and private houses and began shooting residents at random.

Originally, 138 victims were assumed. After more bodies were found and after some wounded died from their injuries, the number of victims rose to at least 160, including 20 children.

Reactions

Roch Marc Kaboré , President of Burkina Faso, described the attack as barbaric and ordered a three-day state mourning. UN Secretary General Guterres was shocked.
