The Lovas massacre took place in the course of the Croatian War in October 1991 in the far east of Croatia . On October 10, 1991, the municipality of Lovas was taken by Serbian militants with the support of troops of the Yugoslav People's Army . According to the indictment of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), a group of 51 Croatians was allegedly forced on October 18, 1991 to “clear” a minefield. 21 people died and 14 were injured. Another 19 Croatians were murdered in the city on the same day, according to ICTY.

A total of 261 houses were completely destroyed. Most of the damage was caused by the Serbian bombing to take the city.
