from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The mass grave in the coal mine of Datong ( Chinese  大同 煤矿 万人坑 , Pinyin Dàtóng méikuàng wànrénkēng ) is a mass grave from the time of the Japanese occupation (1937-1945) during the Second Sino-Japanese War in the coal mine of Datong in the Shanxi province in the north China .

According to the 2005 book by historian Li Jinwen , more than 155,000 (instead of the previously estimated 60,000) workers were killed by Japanese soldiers . Starting in 1963, he interviewed hundreds of survivors and relatives of the victims and researched 8 archives that the Japanese had left behind.

The mass grave has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China (6-905) since 2006 .

The artist Wang Youshen (* 1964) processed the events in the work: Washing: The Mass Grave at Datong 1941 (1995).
