Bulk mailing
Bulk mail generally refers to mail that is sent in bulk and with reduced fees. The term does not reveal any specific intent for the shipment; it is not a synonym for "trash can", also known as "spam".
For example in America: the United States Postal Service defines bulk mailing as “quantities of mail that are prepared for sending at reduced postage rates.” This preparation includes pre-sorting and packing in containers with a ZIP code . The containers are sent with a loading directory to a point at the post office called "bulk mailing". With the help of the pre-sorting and the use of the containers, the shipment, in bulk and in pieces, has been fully automated by bulk shipping centers.
Bulk mailing now also stands for numerous digital message formats such as e-mail, SMS and MMS. Bulky e-mails are colloquially known as spam because, due to the low costs and low technical hurdles involved in sending e-mails, this format invites abuse. SMS bulk mailing and MMS mass mailing are closely monitored by the mobile network operators, so that abuse in the sense of the definition of spam hardly occurs.
Trash mail
Although, strictly speaking, bulk mailing and trash mail (in electronic mail: spam) do not have the same meaning, the two terms are used in everyday language for unsolicited invitations sent by post (typically, but not necessarily, as bulk mail) to citizens and businesses sent.
