Massisteria marina is a heterotrophic flagellate from the Cercozoa group . It is the only species of the genus Massisteria and family Massisteriidae , and belongs to the Cercozoa tribe. It is widespread in the oceans and feeds on bacteria .

features

The cells are flattened and have two short, inactive flagella that lie on the cell surface in the amoeboid stage. The cells form very thin, branched pseudopodia that contain small extrusomes and microtubules.

They have a rather complex cell cycle, which includes amoebas, actively swimming two-flagellated cells and plasmodia. There are no known cysts .

Systematics

Massisteria was formerly part of the Cercomonadida. However, according to molecular genetic studies, it definitely does not belong in this group. They put different works in different groups of the Cercozoa, each with little statistical support. Adl et al. therefore they placed incertae sedis in the Cercozoa. Bass et al. In 2008 they placed Massisteriidae in the class Granofilosea as a separate family .
