The inland shipping master plan was presented on May 14, 2019 by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) in Berlin.

In 2018, work began on the inland shipping master plan with the aim of making inland shipping sustainable and more attractive. In addition to the BMVI, the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration , companies from the inland shipping industry, ports , the construction industry, shippers , the shipyard industry , engine manufacturers and research institutions were also involved. German and European research institutions such as the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Duisburg Research Institute are already working on autonomous inland waterways with the long-term goal of platooning on inland waterways . After almost a year of work, the inland navigation master plan was completed by the BMVI, and the master plan was presented on May 14, 2019 in Berlin.

Focus

The measures in the inland navigation master plan include five focal points:

  • Infrastructure: Investments in the billions for sufficient financial, structural and personnel capacities in the area of waterways .
  • Environmental friendliness and fleet structure: Supporting the industry in converting to more efficient, lower-emission and autonomous ships .
  • Digitization: Inland shipping 4.0 - networking of ships and ports, digitization of locks and ships, automation of transshipment points.
  • Strengthening of multimodal transport chains: Increase in inland shipping in the modal split to 12 percent of the share of transport performance
  • More skilled workers: Support for associations in recruiting young talent and in the nationwide offensive at job fairs.
