Matariyya ( Arabic المطرية, DMG al-Maṭariyya ) is a city in Egypt within the governorate ad-Daqahliyya with approx. 149,000 inhabitants. The city is located on the coast of Lake Manzala in the northeastern part of the country.
history
The city consisted of two main islands called al-Ghasna and al-Okbiyine. They were separate islands until 1903 when the government issued a decree to unite the two islands under the name of Matariyya City. The transport between the two islands was done by wooden boats until the waterway that separated the islands dried up. The first brick houses in the city were built in the 1750s, with the roofs made of wood.
The city was bombed during the Suez Crisis in 1956.
