Mateo Benigno de Moraza

Mateo Benigno de Moraza y Ruiz de Garibay (born September 21, 1817 in Vitoria , † January 17, 1878 in Vitoria) was a Spanish politician, member of the Cortes for Álava , secretary of the town hall of Vitoria, governor of Vizcaya, rector of the Free University and lawyer.

Live and act

Moraza learned Latin and the humanities in the monastery of Santo Domingo, and later law in Valladolid . In 1840 he became a doctor of law doctorate . Moraza distinguished himself as a speaker and ardent advocate of the Basque special rights ( Fueros ). In the old town of Vitoria, Mateo Benigno de Moraza Street and a statue are dedicated to him.
