history

The state material testing office of North Rhine-Westphalia began its work in 1947 on the site of the closed research institute of the United Steelworks AG in Dortmund. In 1952 the company moved to its current location on Marsbruchstrasse.

The task of the MPA NRW was redefined in 1967: the main points are now the "official" material testing for the domestic economy, participation in standardization work and research and development in the field of materials testing. Due to the strong demand for building material tests, a branch office was opened in Essen , but it was closed again in 1984.

With the rapid technical development, the services requested at the MPA NRW also changed. The Minister for Economics, Medium-Sized Enterprises and Transport therefore had the task and the delimitation of the MPA NRW from other similar institutes checked again in 1971. The results were reflected in a new task decree of February 20, 1972. In its new role, the MPA NRW concentrated on examinations in the field of technical safety and economic development. The task of the MPA NRW was to work reliably and independently within the framework of the goals set by the state government against performance remuneration. Full coverage of the testing costs was not provided under the aspect of economic development.

In 1978 the land in Erwitte acquired a property designated exclusively for industrial use in order to create optimal conditions for fire protection investigations. It was and still is important to meet the requirements of environmental protection. The necessary facilities could be implemented here. Today, the Erwitte branch with its extensive fire protection testing facilities is an important part of the MPA NRW.

The MPA NRW has been a state operation since 1995. A new task decree brought significant changes from January 1, 1995. Since then, the MPA NRW has been working with the same instruments as a private company, for example cost / performance accounting, balance sheet and annual accounts, customer surveys and complaint management. Just one year after the MPA NRW was converted into a state company, it was possible to reduce state contributions to the company to zero. In the following years it was even possible to transfer some of the annual surpluses to the state treasury. A corporate mission statement, which was drawn up in 1998 with the participation of the workforce, is based on three pillars: performance orientation, customer orientation and employee orientation.
