The Materials Testing Institute University of Stuttgart (MPA Stuttgart) is an interdisciplinary service company for construction and plant and mechanical engineering . As a central institute, it is affiliated with the University of Stuttgart .

The MPA Stuttgart is located on the Stuttgart-Vaihingen research campus . There it is represented at the two locations Pfaffenwaldring 32 ( plant and mechanical engineering ) and Pfaffenwaldring 2 and 4 ( construction ).

history

In 1884 the material testing institute was founded at the instigation of Carl von Bach at what was then the Royal Württemberg Polytechnic in Stuttgart. Bach also led the institute through the difficult period after the First World War and took care of donors from industry such as Robert Bosch . His successor as director from 1922 to 1927 was Richard Baumann (1879–1928), a close collaborator of Bach. In 1927, due to the increasing specialization in construction, the division into mechanical engineering and construction and in 1930 the two departments were separated into two independent institutions, the State Material Testing Institute (MPA) of the mechanical engineering department and the construction department, which from 1936 under the name of the Institute for Building Research and Material testing of the building industry and from 1952 the official research and material testing institute for the building industry (FMPA-Bauwesen) was called, from 1953 with the nickname Otto-Graf-Institut after the longtime director Otto Graf , whom Bach had brought to the MPA in 1903, to the reinforced concrete research build up. In 1980 the construction department was subordinated to the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economics, Medium-Sized Enterprises and Technology. In 2000 the construction department was reintegrated into the MPA of the University of Stuttgart as a research and material testing institute for construction, Otto Graf Institute (FMPA).

The MPA was headed by Erich Siebel from 1931 to 1961 (except for the period from 1940 to 1947, when Siebel was director of the materials testing institute in Berlin-Dahlem and his Stuttgart institute was provisionally managed and Otto Graf was interim director). Siebel's successors were Karl Wellinger from 1961 to 1976 , Karl Kußmaul from 1976 to 1998 and Eberhard Roos from 1998 to 2011 (from 2003 managing director of the reunited MPA) .

Head of the Construction Department (FMPA) was Otto Graf from 1927 to 1950, Friedrich Tölke from 1952 to 1969 , Gustav Weil from 1969 to 1972 , Gallus Rehm from 1973 to 1990 and Hans-Wolf Reinhardt from 1990 to 2003 . The construction department developed under Bach and Graf in the first half of the 20th century into a leading material testing institute, especially for reinforced and reinforced concrete, whereby Graf worked together with well-known engineering scientists such as Emil Mörsch and Fritz Leonhardt (Leonhardt's ties to the institute continued continued after the Second World War, especially with René Walther from the Otto Graf Institute). Harald Garrecht has been managing director since 2012 .

In the university sector, there is a cooperation agreement between the materials testing institute and the Institute for Materials Testing, Materials Science and Strength Theory (IMWF) and the Institute for Materials in Construction (IWB) at the University of Stuttgart .

structure

There are around 350 employees at the institute, almost half of whom are scientific staff. The staff body consists mainly of civil engineers, mechanical engineers, materials scientists, physicists, chemists, mineralogists and geologists. The material testing institute is divided into the departments

  • Building materials and fire protection,
  • Building constructions and materials technology,
  • Calculation, design and operating behavior,
  • Maintenance of buildings and facilities and
  • Non-destructive testing.

The Institute for Materials in Construction (IWB) and the Institute for Materials Testing, Materials Science and Strength of Materials (IMWF) at the University of Stuttgart are in close cooperation.
