Harald Garrecht (born May 7, 1957 in Heidelberg ) is a German civil engineer and materials scientist .

career

Garrecht studied civil engineering at the University of Karlsruhe and received his doctorate in 1992. His dissertation , supervised by Hubert K. Hilsdorf , dealt with the pore structure and moisture balance of building materials .

From 1985 to 1999 Garrecht worked at the Institute for Solid Construction and Building Material Technology at the University of Karlsruhe, initially as a research assistant , and after completing his doctorate as a senior engineer and senior academic adviser . In 1999 he became professor for building materials science , building physics and building construction at the University of Karlsruhe - Technology and Economics and in the following year director of the central institute for applied research at the university; he also worked in the management of the public building materials testing center. In 2005 he became Vice Rector of the university, but at the end of the following year he accepted an appointment as professor for materials in construction at the Technical University of Darmstadt . In April 2012, Garrecht moved to the University of Stuttgart , where he represents the same subject and also heads the materials testing institute University of Stuttgart . Since April 2017 he has been dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Research areas and professional interests

In building materials science, Garrecht is particularly interested in the effect of mechanical loads and environmental influences, the development of environmentally and resource-saving materials, the recycling of demolition material and the preservation and renovation of built-up materials. He pays particular attention to particularly high-performance types of concrete .

The preservation and restoration of historic buildings worthy of monument protection, also in terms of building physics, is particularly important to Garrecht. In 2013 he was elected 1st Chairman and President of the Scientific and Technical Working Group for Building Preservation and Monument Preservation (WTA).
