René Walther (born March 8, 1928 in Basel ) is a Swiss civil engineer.

Life

Walther was the son of a mechanical engineer and studied civil engineering at the ETH Zurich with a diploma in 1952, researched the structural behavior of concrete at the Eidgenössische Materialprüfungsanstalt and studied from 1955 at Lehigh University , where he received his doctorate in 1957. He then worked as an engineer at Losinger AG in Bern until 1959. In 1959 Fritz Leonhardt brought him to the Technical University of Stuttgart , where he became head of the steel and concrete department at the Otto Graf Institute in 1963 . In 1963 he founded the engineering office Walther, Mory, Maier in Basel with Hans Mory and in 1975 he became professor for concrete structures at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne(EPFL) and was director of the Institute for Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete. In 1995 he retired.

He was particularly concerned with cable-stayed bridges (he designed the Rhine bridge Diepoldsau from 1985 and the Rhone bridge Saint-Maurice in 1986) and his research in this area enabled the construction of modern cable-stayed bridges with slender longitudinal girders. Together with and for Fritz Leonhardt, he carried out numerous experiments on reinforced concrete in Stuttgart. His projects included the underground car park of the Basel Cantonal Hospital (1972 to 1974) and the paper tower of the Swiss pavilion at the Seville World Exhibition in 1992.

He wrote an introductory textbook on reinforced concrete construction for architects and monographs on cable-stayed bridges. From 1989 he published the series Traité de génie civil de l'Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne . In 2005 he received the Fritz Leonhardt Prize , the Freyssinet Medal in 1994 and the Emil Mörsch Memorial Coin in 1993 . In 2001 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Stuttgart.
