A material scale is the stepped (in the sense of a scale ) arranged tone stock of a tone system , from which so-called usage scales are obtained by selection . The most important material scale of the western culture is the chromatic scale , from which z. B. the major and minor scales can be selected. In other musical cultures there are other material scales , such as the twelve Lü (which only roughly correspond to the chromatic scale) in Chinese music or the Shrutis in Indian music .
