Discontinuities

The discontinuity and discontinuity called, is a term from the material and testing technology. It generally describes a flaw in a measurement.

The term is mainly used in the field of non-destructive testing when material defects such as cracks, inclusions, pores, voids, doublings or other discontinuities in the structure can be discovered and cannot be directly qualified.

One speaks of a discontinuity when absorption , transmission (2.) , reflection or other physical properties on the workpiece to be tested change due to a defect. In the case of frequency-dependent test methods, discontinuities can usually be found that are greater than half the measurement wavelength .
