Mathias Beytler
Mathias Beytler , also Mathias Beutler or Mathias Beitler (* around 1550 probably in Augsburg ; † after 1615) was a goldsmith and copperplate engraver in Ansbach , who published small-format stitch sequences and ornamental engravings from 1582 .
Life
Mathias Beytler's circumstances are largely unknown. After Friedrich Müller, he was born in Augsburg around 1550 . In 1582, three small-format stitch series appeared under his name, the Bossenbüchlein, the Thierbüchlein and the Rosenbüchlein by the goldsmith Steffan Hermann in Ansbach. From 1601 to 1606 lived on the Lesser Town in Prague as a subtenant of the court goldsmith Herzig van Bein in the house of the Red Lion on Hollweg. In 1614 he called himself Hartschier (bodyguard) in Prague. In Prague, Rudolf II repeatedly provided artists with positions at court. From 1612 Beytler engraved several small-format black-figure leaves with grottosand heraldic representations. He was last mentioned in Ansbach in 1616. Several reprints of the editions are known. The black ornaments and grottos, which were created from 1612 on, are characterized by their ingenuity and wealth of details. The sheets mostly bear Beytler's signature MB.
