Mathieu Gascongne

Mathieu Gascongne , also Gascogne , Guascogne and Guascogne (* 15th or 16th century; † 16th century, effective in the early 16th century) was a French composer of the Renaissance.

life and work

Little is known about Gascongne biographically. Gascongne is mentioned in 1518 as a priest of the Diocese of Cambrai . In the literature, two basic theses about Gascongne's life, which are either alternative or complementary, are represented:

(1) Gascongne was closely associated with the French royal court as a composer. This assumption is supported by motets that Gascongne wrote for the coronation of Francis I of France .
(2) Gascongne was associated with a group of composers who all worked in Cambrai around 1517/1518. This assumption is supported by the fact that many of his compositions were published as manuscripts in Cambrai and are still stored there in archives today.

It is possible that both theses are correct and in the first decades of the 16th century he worked at the court in Paris and later in Cambrai. Willibald Gurlitt represents thesis (1) in the Riemanns Musiklexikon in a non-exclusive sense. François Lesure explicitly advocates the consistency of both theses in the MGG .

Gascongne has received three printed and five handwritten masses, a four-part magnificat, around 30 four-part, one two-part and two three-part motets.

Gascogne is not identical to Johannes G. (or Gascoing), of whom three masses have been preserved and of whom works are also stored in the Cambrai archives.
