Matra MS9

The Matra MS9 was a Formula 1 racing car, developed and built by Matra in 1968.

The MS9 was a test car that was only used in a single Formula 1 race. The car had a modified MS7 chassis and the suspensions of the Matra sports car. The car was to serve as a test vehicle for the Matra 12 cylinder engine, but Ken Tyrrell insisted on a solution for the 8 cylinder Cosworth engine . The car was rebuilt because the DFV unit had to be a load-bearing element of the lightweight tubular space frame that connected the monocoque to the rear suspension.

Since the MS10 was not yet finished, the MS9 was used in an unexpected race at the 1968 South African Grand Prix . The racing car was only assembled on site, but Jackie Stewart qualified for the front row. The Scot retired in the race with an engine failure.
