Matriculation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matriculation , or Matric for short (from Latin matricula, "tribe"; what is meant is the membership list of a university ), officially the National Senior Certificate , is a school-leaving certificate in South Africa . It is issued after the twelfth year of school and enables students to attend a university with the appropriate qualification level.

description

In South Africa, students can attend high school for five years ( Grade 8 to Grade 12 ) after seven years at primary school . At its end there is the matric. The students of the last school year are called matrics . The exam can also be taken by “part-time students”. These are often students who have had to leave school prematurely because of poor performance. The examination results of the part-time students are not part of the national and school statistics. They are significantly worse than the results of the full-time students.

The exam is officially called Senior Certificate Examination and is organized nationwide by the Matriculation Board , which is part of the Higher Education Enrollment Services Program . The matric exams are written in the mother tongue, another language, mathematics, mathematical literacy, life orientation and other subjects according to national guidelines.

With a performance of 50 to 59 percent you reach the level normal pass in the subject , with up to 79 percent a pass with merit (for example: “passed”) and above that the level distinction (“award”). There are levels in the overall ranking

  • Higher Certificate (at least 40 percent in three recognized subjects, including one of the official languages at native speaker level, at least 30 percent in three other subjects)
  • Moderate Achievement (at least 40 percent in four recognized subjects; enables a degree at diploma level)
  • Adequate Achievement (at least 50 percent in four recognized subjects; enables a bachelor's degree)

In the case of corresponding achievements, you will receive a matriculation endorsement (for example: “ Certificate of Ability to Study”), which is required for the Bachelor's degree . Applicants who did not graduate in South Africa or who have other reasons can apply for a matric exemption (“Matric Exemption”). Universities conduct National Benchmark Tests (" National Placement Tests ") as entry tests before starting a course , the tasks of which are also created for the Higher Education Enrollment Services Program .

Pupils who have failed up to two subjects, who were disadvantaged due to medical or private problems or who have not yet reached the degree required for a degree can repeat the examination at the beginning of the following year.

Many private schools have the final exam carried out by the Independent Examination Board (IEB). The test subjects are called IEB matriculant .

history

135,943 candidates took repeat exams at the beginning of 2015.

In 2017, 75.1% of the candidates passed the Matric. The opposition Democratic Alliance pointed out, however, that in relation to the number of students in 2015, only 37.3% passed grade 10 , meaning that many students had to leave school early.

In 2019, 81.3% of the 787,717 candidates passed the Matric. 616,754 “full-time students” and 170,963 “part-time students” were among the candidates. 185,058 candidates qualified for a bachelor's degree. In the same year, over 98 percent of the IEB matriculants passed the examination, around 90 percent of the examinees achieved matriculation endorsement.
