The Matrix Corporate Center is a prominent building in the city of Danbury , Connecticut . The structure was built between 1980 and 1982 on behalf of Union Carbide and was initially called the Union Carbide Corporate Center . It served the chemical company as the new headquarters and provided space for 3,000 employees who were relocated from the old company headquarters in New York City, the Union Carbide Building . The Matrix Corporate Center was planned by the architect and later winner of the Pritzker Prize , Kevin Roche , and his architectural office Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo & Associates . The office building is secluded from the heart of Danbury in a wooded area and can be reached via two access bridges that lead directly to the parking levels in the north and south. The office wings radiate from these parking levels to the sides. These are located in the outer cells, which have been optimized to have the smallest possible facade area while ensuring a large amount of daylight in all offices. All offices have the same floor space and only vary in their floor plan between a square and a wedge-shaped area. The equipment style of the workstations could be chosen from several alternatives by the employees. In the middle of the building, between the parking areas in the north and south, there is a supply wing with canteens, two libraries, shops and ATMs. The entire structure with a floor area of 195,000 square meters is over 400 meters in length and over 200 meters wide. The entire complex is elevated by 5000 columns, which means that the floor area has not been leveled. In the course of the severe corporate crisis as a result of the negligently caused disaster at Bhopal , the number of employees at the location was gradually reduced and unused space was rented out. Union Carbide was finally acquired by Dow in 2001 . The building has been owned by the Matrix Realty Group since 2009, which renamed it the Matrix Corporate Center and temporarily leased office space to companies such as Praxair and Boehringer Ingelheim . In the near past, several anchor tenants ended their tenancies.
