Matsuoka Hisashi ( Japanese 松岡 寿 ; born March 5, 1862 in Okayama Prefecture ; died April 28, 1944 ) was a Japanese painter of the Yōga direction during the Meiji , Taishō, and Shōwa periods .

life and work

Matsuoka Hisashi was born to a samurai in Okayama Prefecture. In 1872, just 10 years old, he moved to Tōkyō with his father. Already at this time he began to paint pictures in the European style. After the opening of the State Art School of the Ministry of Public Works ( 工部 美術 学校 , Kōbu bijutsu gakkō ) in 1876 , Matsuoka studied for two years under Antonio Fontanesi . When Fontanesi left school in 1878, Asai Chū , he and others left the school and founded the artists 'association "Elfer Group" ( 十一 会 , Jūichi-kai ), the first modern artists' association in Japan.

In 1880, at the age of 19, Matsuoka traveled to Italy to continue his education there. He worked under Cesare Maccari (1840-1919), an honorary professor at the State Art School of Rome, and in 1881 entered the free school attached to the institution. In 1883 he received permission to enter the State Art School himself, where he graduated in 1887. The picture “Man in Pietro Micca's Clothes ” was created during this time. Before Matsuoka returned to Japan in 1888, he visited Paris.

Back in Japan, Matsuoka founded the artists' association Meiji bijutsu-kai ( 明治 美術 会 ) with Asai Chū and others . He now devoted himself intensively to the training of young artists and taught at the Army School, then at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Tōkyō and at the Meijibijutsu School. In 1921 he became president of the Tōkyō Art Academy ( 東京 美術 学校 , Tōkyō bijutsu gakkō ), the forerunner of today's Geidai . He also acted as a juror for the state exhibition of the Ministry of Culture, the Mombu-shō bijutsu tenrankai ( 文部省 美術展 覧 会 ).

Matsuoka continued to paint, creating large-format history paintings around 1935. The very big breakthrough was denied him, but he left behind remarkable landscapes of Europe, especially Italy.
