Mattancherry (മട്ടാഞ്ചേരി) is a part of the city of Kochi in India , which also includes Fort Kochi and Ernakulam . Various temples and tourist attractions can be found in Mattancherry; The Mattacherry Palace, built around 1555 by the Portuguese as a gift to the Raja of Kochi and later expanded by the Dutch, once served as a royal palace and is now a museum. There is also a synagogue built around 1568 nearby; Jew Town , the former Jewish quarter, is now home to numerous tourist shops.
There are numerous, partly contradicting theories about the origin of the name Mattancherry ; some claim that it is a modification of the expression lamb meat street (mutton cheri), as lamb butchers used to live here. Others think the name derives from Ancherry Mattam , "House of the Brahmin".
