history
In 1933 the brothers Hermann and Rudolf Matthäi founded the company Hermann Matthäi OHG, a road and civil engineering company. The first building project in the founding year, on behalf of Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler , was the Sachsenhain in Verden. 4500 boulders were excavated in heath villages and erected as a memorial for the Saxons allegedly executed by Charlemagne at Verden ( blood court of Verden ). In addition, three large half-timbered houses were dismantled at the Bergen military training area and rebuilt in the north of the facility after their restoration.
Hermann Matthäi was killed in World War II on February 12, 1945. His brother Rudolf continued to run the company on his own.
Gerhard Matthäi was born in Verden in 1941 as the son of Rudolf Matthäi. He studied road and transport construction at the Technical University of Braunschweig and took over the management from 1967.
After the number of employees had risen to 1,100 in 1970, a new head office was built in Verden, Bremer Strasse.
Since Gerhard Matthäi's death in 2007, the company has been managed by the Matthäi Foundation and the two managing directors Andreas Höttler and Bernd Afflerbach.
