Matthew of Vendôme (also Matthaeus or Matheus Vindocinensis ) was a 12th century French writer. He was in Tours , where he was brought up by his uncle, the Archbishop of Tours, who said he was a pupil of Bernardus Silvestris . At the time of Hugo Primate he lived in Orléans , followed by ten years in Paris . On his return to Tours he belonged to the court of Archbishop Barthelemy of Vendôme. He is known for his Ars Versificatoria , a theoretical work on Latin verse theory .

Matthew coined the hexameter handed down in school rhetoric with the six questions of the classical topic : Quis, quid, ubi, quibus auxiliis, cur, quomodo, quando? (Who, what, where, with what, why, how, when?).
