Matthias Bleyl

Matthias Bleyl (born 1953 in Iserlohn , Westphalia ) is a German art historian and university professor . He lives and works in Berlin .

Matthias Bleyl studied art history, archeology, modern history and philosophy at the Ruhr University Bochum , where he received his doctorate in 1980 with a work on portrait painting of French classicism supervised by Max Imdahl and Manfred Wundram .

From 1980 to 1982 he was a volunteer at the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt . He then worked as a research assistant at the Art History Institute at the University of Frankfurt am Main and at the Art History Institute in Freiburg i. Br. As well as lecturer at the University of Saarland , the State University of Fine Arts Frankfurt and the State University of Design Offenbach. In 1988 he was the first German art scholar to receive his habilitation with a thesis on art after 1945 at the University of Saarland.

He then taught at the Universities of Freiburg i. Br., Regensburg, Landau / Pfalz and Paris Nanterre. From 1993 to 2018 he was full professor for general art history with a focus on the 20th century at the Weißensee Kunsthochschule berlin , where he temporarily held the position of spokesperson for theory and history and vice-rector for studies and teaching. Matthias Bleyl's research focuses on Venetian art from the 16th to 18th centuries, French art around 1800 and various areas of contemporary art.
