from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matthias Christian Rillig (* 1968 in Speyer ) is a German biologist with a research focus on plant and soil ecology .

Life

Matthias Rillig studied biology at the University of Kaiserslautern and the University of Edinburgh from 1989 to 1992 . He then received his doctorate in 1997 from the University of California, Davis and the San Diego State University with Mike Allen on the subject of the effects of increased atmospheric carbon dioxide on the symbiosis of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi . As a PostDoc, he worked at the Carnegie Institution of Washington from 1998 to 1999 . From 1999 he was first assistant professor and then from 2005 associate professor of microbial ecology at the University of Montana . Since 2007 he has been a professor at the Institute of Biology and head of the Plant Ecology Group at the Free University of Berlin .

Research area

Matthias Rillig's versatile research area is in the field of soil and plant ecology , where he deals, among other things, with the symbiosis of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi with plants and their effects on soil aggregation. The transport of allelopathic substances via the mycelium is also researched in his group, which has grown considerably . He also studies the effects of other soil organisms such as phytopathogenic fungi on plants and plant communities. He uses saprobic fungi as model systems to test ecological principles. He also investigates the effects of biochar and hydrothermally carbonized material on the soil ecosystem.

Publications

Matthias Rillig is the author of numerous scientific publications in the field of soil and plant ecology. Since 2004 he has been editor-in-chief of the scientific journal Pedobiologia and publisher of Ecology and PLOS ONE .
