Matthias Schmidt (born February 8, 1963 in Homberg / Efze ) is a German politician and was a member of the German Bundestag for the SPD .

Life

Matthias Schmidt attended the Philippinum grammar school in Marburg and passed the Abitur examination there. He completed his studies with a degree in administrative management and then worked from 1988 for the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden and Berlin. From 1999 to 2013 he was employed in the Federal Ministry of the Interior , where he resumed his previous work after leaving the Bundestag.

Matthias Schmidt has been married since 1982 and has three children. Schmidt was chairman of the Treptower Teufel tennis club in Berlin for many years and is particularly committed to the city partnership of his district with the Italian city of Albinea . As an old division footballer, he played for 1. FC Union Berlin .

Schmidt was elected to the district assembly in Treptow-Köpenick in 2006 and became chairman of the SPD parliamentary group there in 2011. In the federal election in 2013 he ran in the constituency of Treptow-Köpenick and entered the 18th German Bundestag via the state list . He was deputy spokesman for the SPD regional group East in the German Bundestag and a member of the interior and sports committee . In the federal election in 2017 , he lost his seat.
