Matvei Kuzmich Shaposhnikov ( Russian Матвей Кузьмич Шапошников ; born November 16 . Jul / 29. November  1906 greg. In Alekseevka ; † 28. June 1994 in Rostov-on-Don ) was a Soviet officer.

Shaposhnikov took part in the Second World War, where he was named Hero of the Soviet Union in 1944 . In 1955 he became lieutenant general of the armored forces and commanded the 2nd Guards Panzer Army of the GSSD from 1956 to 1961 . In 1962 he was appointed Deputy Commander of the North Caucasus Military District.

During the 1962 uprising in Novocherkassk , Shaposhnikov refused, as ordered by the commander of the military district, General Pliyev , to use tanks against the insurgents. In 1966 Shaposhnikov was released into the reserve. In 1967 he was expelled from the CPSU . In the same year charges were brought against him for "anti-Soviet propaganda" - he had sent letters about the events of Novocherkassk to several writers, among others - but dropped them in view of his war merits. In 1988 Shaposhnikov was rehabilitated and re-accepted into the party.
