The 2nd Guard Panzer Army (short: 2nd GPA ; Russian 2-я гвардейская танковая армия / Troop part №: 04085) was a large unit of the Red Army or Soviet Army . Today it is part of the Russian Land Forces as the 2nd General Guard Army . It was set up during World War II and after 1945 was subordinate to the Group of the Soviet Armed Forces in Germany and the Western Group of Troops (GSSD / WGT). The headquarters of the army was at this time in Fürstenberg (Havel) . In 1993 she was withdrawn to Russia . The army has had different names since its formation and is now deployed in the Volga-Urals military district .
history
The major association has had the following names since it was set up:
- 2nd Panzer Army (January 15, 1944, first formation)
- 2nd Guards Panzer Army (November 20, 1944, created after reclassification from 2nd PA )
- 2. Mechanized Guard Army (June 1945, reclassification)
- 2nd Guard Panzer Army (April 1957, renamed; de facto General Army from mid-1980 )
- 2nd General Guard Army (2001 reorganization, 2002 renaming)
Second World War
The formation of the 2nd Guards Panzer Army took place according to the order № 0376 of the People's Commissar for Defense of November 20, 1944, mainly from units and units of the 2nd Panzer Army , with immediate integration into the 1st Belarusian Front . Here the army successfully took part in attack operations in the direction of Warsaw-Poznań, Inowrocław and the Battle of East Pomerania, covered around 700 km in 15 days fighting and was temporarily taken into reserve on April 19, 1945. This was followed by participation in the Battle of the Seelow Heights and the Battle of Berlin . By the end of the war, 103,352 soldiers in the army were awarded orders and medals for bravery in combat, and 221 became Heroes of the Soviet Union .
Post-war period
After the war, the army was subordinated to the GSSD / WGT, with the army's headquarters being set up in Fürstenberg (Havel) , which remained here until the withdrawal in 1993.
In June 1945 the name was changed to the 2nd Mechanized Guard Army , but in April 1957 the previous designation 2nd Guard Panzer Army was used again. In terms of armament and equipment, the army achieved de facto the status of a general army in the mid-1980s , although the previous name was retained unchanged. By the end of 1993, the 2nd GPA was withdrawn to Russia and deployed in the Privolsk military district.
From 2001, the 2nd General Guard Army was formed from the troops and units of the 2nd Guards Panzer Army , at which time the traditional troop flags and awards were handed over. From 2002 the large association was named 2. General Guard Army - 2. AGA ( Russian 2-я гвардейская Краснознамённая общевойсковая армия / 2-ja gwardeiskaja Krasnosnamjonnaja obschtajaiskowo).
