Nikolai Yegorowitsch Makarow ( Russian: Николай Егорович Макаров ; born October 7, 1949 in Glebowo, Ryazan Oblast ) was a Russian officer . The Army General was Chief of Staff of the Russian Armed Forces from June 3, 2008 to November 9, 2012 .

After graduating from the Moscow General Officers School in 1971, Makarov served in the Group of the Soviet Armed Forces in Germany (GSSD) as platoon commander, company commander and battalion commander in the years that followed . In 1979 he graduated from the military academy "MW Frunze" and then served in the Transbaikalia military district as a staff officer, regimental and division commander .

In 1993 Makarov graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces and then led troop groups in Tajikistan and the Volga region . From 1996 to 1997 he was in command of the 2nd Guards Tank Army .

Since 1998 he has been in command of the land and coastal forces and deputy to the commander of the Baltic Fleet for the land and coastal forces. From September 1999 Makarov took over the post of Chief of Staff and First Deputy Commander of the Troops of the Moscow Military District until he was transferred as Commander to the Siberian Military District in December 2002 .

In 2007, President Vladimir Putin appointed him Deputy Minister of Defense , responsible for arms issues. On June 3, 2008 he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Russian Armed Forces by the new President Dmitry Medvedev . He replaced Juri Balujewski , who became deputy chairman of the National Security Council . On November 9, 2012, he was replaced in his position by Colonel General Valery Gerasimov on the instructions of President Putin .
